Insider Digest 8/5/21: Gaming Regulation, Youth Internet Usage, and Assessment of Risks
I was traveling this week to Los Angeles with some other investors to see Peter Kaufman of Poor Charlie’s Almanac fame and so did not get to look carefully at some of the more important happenings in China tech, such as Kuaishou and Alibaba’s results. Luckily, not much else happened aside from the gaming is spiritual opium fiasco which I did follow and talked to lots of folks about, so you’ll find a bit on that below! Otherwise, this week’s writeups are a bit abbreviated, and I hope to be back in full form next week!
Announcement: We’ll still stick to the 6AM PST / 9AM EST / 9PM Asia Time weekly Zoom for this Friday 8/6! We always find something fun to talk about, and I’m guessing this week will be more regulation talk, so do join us!

8/1/21 No, Gaming Will Not Go the way of After School Tutoring
I've spoken to various first and secondhand sources in the gaming sector and I think that everyone is confused about whether or not more gaming restrictions are coming down the pipeline. There are very few confident voices. However, just because everyone is flustered doesn't mean that you should despair gaming will be regulated like after school tutoring. No indeed! There is no evidence of that at all. More anti-addiction and youth protection might be coming, but not a wholesale destruction of the entire space as some fear.
7/2021: Summary of Government Study on Chinese Minor Internet Use
This post summarizes the "2020 National Study on Internet Usage by Minors," which was jointly published by the Communist Youth League and the CNNIC. The data is often cited as reason for anti-gaming regulation. Besides that, I found some interesting statistics on what Chinese parents are most worried about when it comes to internet use (nearsightedness!) and whose responsibility they think it is to control their kids’ behavior (just 50% think it’s the parents’ job, apparently). I hope this gives you more context on what is up with all this minor protection in Chinese internet.

The below graphic was shared in chat on regulatory risk and how it could affect various industries. I had a few points to add, and I would love to hear yours!
