Dear Insider,
As you know, in November and December, we have experimented with a new approach for Tech Buzz China content. We have collaborated with Six Degrees Intelligence, a leading global expert network / quantitative research firm that operates in China, to create articles that were largely gleaned from multiple proprietary expert interviews you won’t find elsewhere.
While membership fees were being halted, we have given you four of these experimental articles:
· Douyin’s E-Commerce Efforts & Its Increasing Taobao-fication
· (Further) Details on Shein’s Operations
· Temu - Pinduoduo’s Cross-Border E-commerce Platform
The last two articles were created by Ed Sander and Freya Zhang and edited by Rui. Feedback we received on these four articles has been very positive.
You will know Freya Zhang as the community manager for Tech Buzz China in the past 2 years. Freya worked at Beijing-based tech startups for 7 years and was privileged to experience the rapid growth of China tech. After completing her studies in Australia, she continued to pursue a career in China tech and now lives in Germany.
Ed Sander, from The Netherlands, has had a passion for exploring China’s digital technology ever since living in Xi’an, China from 2011 to 2013. He has written hundreds of articles for various media and his own website (chinatalk.nl) and is an active public speaker and study tour leader. We are happy to have him on board.
In February we will be restarting the paid Tech Buzz China Insider membership when the next article is published and build on the approach we tested last year, with Ed and Freya continuing to be the main creators for the new articles.
Rui will be taking a step back from her work for Tech Buzz China: “I am taking more time to devote to my passion and real core skillset, which is early-stage startup investing. For those of you who have invested with me via the TBC Syndicate last year, I'm busy trying to figure out what the next iteration looks like in this greatly changed investing environment, but whatever it is, I'll be sure to open any co-investing opportunities to the TBC Insider community first.”
And don’t worry, Rui will remain active as a Consulting Editor, helping Ed and Freya select topics and doing some final editing before publication.
The community aspect of Tech Buzz Insider will be scaled down. We will discontinue the Circles website and are looking for a way to make the old content available somewhere for reference purposes of paying subscribers. With the Circle community closing, we will also be opening newsletter subscription to all interested, no longer requiring a knowledge test like before.
We will also leave the Discord platform open for you to continue your lively discussions.
For the $25 membership fee you will continue to receive two deep dive articles per month. While this frequency is lower than you might be used to in the past, this publication schedule will enable us to do more in-depth research into each topic and produce more elaborate content.
Besides the exclusive information from the Six Degrees Intelligence expert network, which will be the basis of each article, we will augment each article with relevant information on recent developments from a selection of Chinese language tech media, which often don’t make it into English language media. We also plan to provide a more visual presentation with diagrams and graphs where possible. All together, we consider this to be a further upgrade of the quality of our content. In the future we might also launch other forms of content.
We hope you enjoyed the four exclusive free articles enough for you to continue your membership. If, however you don’t want to receive this exclusive content and prefer to cancel your subscription, please let us know by sending an e-mail to team@techbuzzchina.com.
You should find the first article, on Xiaohongshu, in your inbox mid-February.
Thank you for your continued support,
Rui, Freya and Ed
